Fall Tips To Avoid Dry Skin

Updated on October 24, 2008

Dry flaky skin in fall weather ? Is it possible to avoid it? Most definitely yes! You can have a supple, dewy and moist skin irrespective of age or any skin type like oily, dry or normal. To revitalize and rejuvenate dry skin, you need to follow 2 basic skin care routine - A Healthy Diet and External Skin Care.

1. A Healthy Diet: What goes inside your body has a result on the external skin.

* Hydrate skin by drinking at least 8 glasses of water everyday. Try the Chinese herbal therapy, drink a glass of warm water with half a lemon every morning.

* Supplement diet with essential fatty acids and omega .

* Include olive oil in your diet . Drink raw vegetable juice, particularly carrot juice daily.

* Eat green vegetables, yellow fruits and vegetables which are rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant.

* Avoid alcohol, caffeine, smoking, fried foods and animal fats.

* Drink green tea everyday.

Extra tip for the above 40 and 50 year olds:

Drink Herbal tea with a squeeze of lemon early in the morning, in empty stomach.

2. FOR EXTERNAL CARE :

• Shower in lukewarm water as hot water robs the skin of moisture. Use mineral water to wash face. Shun tap water as it contains chlorine and other chemicals.

• Use a moisturising and mild fragrance free soap. Fragrance has chemicals in it.

• Exfoliate skin with a mild scrub to remove dead cells during shower.

• Abundantly dab moisturisers with anti-oxidants after shower when skin is still damp - body butter for dry skin and water based for oily skin .Avoid perfumed lotions as they contain chemicals .A good alternative is baby oil or aloe vera gel after bath.

• Keep a humidifier or place a pan of water near the radiator to humidify the environment.

• Prevent chapped lips by using a moisturising lipstick during daytime and lip balm or Vaseline while going to bed. Exfoliate lips with toothbrush when brushing your teeth.

• Cream on moisturiser or Vitamin E oil on hands and feet and put on gloves and socks for half-hour before going to bed.

• Massage body and face with almond oil before shower.

Extra tip for the above 40 and 50 year olds:

* Opt for bath oils or oatmeal scrubs, while taking a shower.

* After shower, pat entire body with virgin coconut oil, cocoa butter, or shea butter. They contain skin-friendly vitamins and protein.

* Instead of washing, cleanse skin with a cleanser, cleansing gel (oily skin) or cleansing milk (dry skin).

* Spritz face with mineral water spray and apply moisturiser several times during the day at home or office.

Supplementary care for general wellness during fall weather:

• Get sufficient sleep.

• Exercise or do aerobics for a healthy glow.

• Use natural face packs to nourish and smooth the skin before bath.

Quick natural face packs for dry skin

* Mash ripe banana ,add little milk, apply and wash off with tepid water after 15 mins.

* Squash half an avocado ,a few drops of fresh lemon juice, apply and wash after 15 mins.

*Crush 1 cup of strawberries, few drops lemon juice, one egg white, and a few drops of eucalyptus oil.

*Blend watermelon, papaya, banana or oranges with two drops of lavender essential oil.

Good homemade body scrubs :

*Mix half cup Epsom salts, one tablespoon olive or canola oil , few drops of lemon or orange juice. Apply to dry areas.

* Mix half cup sugar, one tablespoon olive or almond oil, few drops almond extract. Apply and rinse off.

It is prudent to take a little extra care and avoid having a dry flaky skin than treating it!
